Five vehicles, including a brand-new double cabin pickup truck belonging to the Ugandan Inspector General of Police (IGP), have been recovered in Kenya after being stolen in Uganda. This string of recoveries highlights the effectiveness of cross-border collaboration between Ugandan and Kenyan authorities in curbing vehicle theft.

Summary:

  • Bukedi South Region Police Publicist Moses Mugwe reported that several interceptions in recent months indicate that criminals are targeting the Eastern border.
  • This car was tracked via GPS and CCTV footage from Kampala to Jinja City and then towards the Busia border.

The IGP’s vehicle was reportedly stolen from Kireka, a suburb of Kampala. Leveraging GPS tracking technology and their strong partnership with Kenyan forces, Ugandan police were able to locate the vehicle in a house on Mumias Road, Busia Municipality, Kenya.

This incident is not isolated. Bukedi South Region Police Publicist Moses Mugwe reported that several interceptions in recent months indicate that criminals are targeting the Eastern border to smuggle stolen vehicles from Kampala into Kenya.

The recovery of a Toyota Wish stolen at gunpoint further underscores the success of this collaborative approach. After being taken from its owner in Bombo, the car was tracked via GPS and CCTV footage from Kampala to Jinja City and then towards the Busia border. Information sharing between Interpol, Ugandan authorities, and Kenyan authorities led to the car’s recovery in Siaya County, Western Kenya.

The success of these operations underscores the importance of the partnership between Ugandan and Kenyan authorities, along with Interpol, played a vital role in recovering the stolen vehicles. Also, technology as GPS tracking devices proved invaluable in locating and recovering the stolen vehicles.

Furthermore, timely reporting Investigators emphasized the importance of prompt theft reporting by car owners to aid in swift recovery. These are the important partnerships between Uganda and Kenya.
