The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) is set to reach out deep villages and islands so that they can register people living in certain areas. This has come out after finding out that over 18 Million Ugandans are unregistered.

NIRA as the identification and registration authority of Uganda, its work is to manage, create, maintain and operate the National Identification Register by registering all citizens in their particular places and giving the national identity cards.

It should be noted that, Uganda’s population is 45 Million people but it came to the attention of NIRA after finding out that only ,27 million of them are registered and 18 million are left out hence making the social economic system of the Nation unbalanced.

While appearing in an interview which was held in Naguru one month back with the media, the Executive Director NIRA, Rosemary Kisembo said that all Ugandans aged 16 years and above must possess National Identification Numbers (NIN). This is why there are many Ugandans that are no registered.

The Executive Director added on that, the process shall be across 10,717 municipalities over 10 months all over the country. She also uttered out that, they resolved to adopt in addition to facial and thumbprint biometrics.

Mister Moses Talibita a Lawyer working with Uganda National Health Consumers also requested the government to make laws that govern National Identity Cards to prevent some people from misusing them.

More to that; the National Identification Cards in Uganda were issued in 2014 with 10 years of validity. NIRA was created by the Ugandan Parliament in the law known as the Registration of Persons.

And the full exercise to register Ugandans is yet to kick off as NIRA is almost through with the recruitment of Registration Supervisors and Assistants countrywide. And it is everyone’s responsibility to register and get a National ID.
