The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Uganda has announced the guidelines for candidates who wish to contest in the upcoming Kisoro District by-elections 2024. The by-election is being held to fill positions left vacant due to the death or resignation of sitting members.
Key Requirements for Candidates that are to vie for the available vacant positions are as follows;
For parliamentary candidates; they must not be members of the armed forces, including the army, police, and prisons. One must not be a cultural leader, not be employed by the government currently, and must submit a written expression of interest letter.
More so, one must submit copies of their academic documents, they have to pay a non-refundable fee of Shs1 million to the NRM party. Again, any candidate must be at least 18 years old and has be registered as a voter within the NRM party.
For Local Government Council candidates; Youth Councillors must be below 30 years of age and older persons councillors must be 60 years of age and above. Furthermore, they must be residents within the relevant electoral area.
All interested candidates are free to express their interest between September 23rd and 30th, 2024. The NRM has stated that there will be no primaries for the position of district woman councillor representing Chahi/Chanika Town Council, as the party already has a flag bearer for that position.
Here are the available vacant positions to be filled
For Parliamentary positions, Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, following the death of Sarah Mateke, and local government council positions include; District Woman Councillor, South Division (NRM resignation).
Municipal Male Older Person Councillor, Northern Division (NRM death), Municipal Male Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Councillor (NRM death). Also, Sub-county Male Youth Councillor, Chahafi Town Council (NRM resignation).

Sub-county Female PWD Councillor Bunagana Town Council (NRM death) and the NRM is encouraging eligible individuals to participate in the by-elections. This is still a further move to strengthen the ruling party in the area so that it keeps its grip on what it has now.
