Top Five alcohol drinking countries in East Africa

Man and alcohol are best friends that go way back in time. Alcohol is used for many purposes besides making one lose their senses. However, the primary role of liquor is for enjoyment and creating a vibe.

Well, there are people who take boozing to a whole other level and are ranked numerically as if their drinking was a sport. So, for today let’s look at the statistics that reveal the top alcohol drinking nations on the African continent.

Nigeria

Well, the nation is known as the giant of Africa and they are bound to get involved in everything that happens in Africa. The West African nation sits at number 5 at the top alcohol drinking nations in Africa. Sadly, they are not the ‘Odogwu’ in this sport.

As they are busy cooking in Nollywood, sports and Afro Beats, so are their liquor stores. The large percentage of Nigerians also contribute to their being on this list. Wherever they are, Nigerians are renowned for drinking and it comes at number five.

DR Congo/Congo Brazzaville

Yeah, just like these countries twin in their names so do they twin in downing the bottle. Close to each other, it seems they cross into each other freely in drinking competitions. In fact, they might not even know which Congo they drank in since they drink almost the same types of liquors. Kudos to you, the double Congos for being in the top alcohol drinking countries in Africa 2024 coming at number Four.

Zimbabwe

The late Robert Mugabe might have liberated Zimbabweans from oppressive minority rule but one thing he failed to do was separate them from the bottle. Even when economic situations toughen up in the South African nation, the people somehow find a way to afford liquor. ‘They beat it’ 24/7 Monday to Monday.

This puts the country in the third place in the alcohol drinking countries in Africa as of 2024. Initially, Zimbabwe was not on this list, but it seems that over time, liberty has hit the country and drinking is slowly becoming a norm.

South Africa

Well, the list would not have been complete with our brothers in the South. They are absolute guzzlers. From the cheap liquor to the expensive bottles, they do it all. Being a mixed society of Africans and Europeans, the alcohol too is a mixture.

In fact their liquor is a mixture of Amapiano. South Africans and alcohol are best friends that can never be separated. And for that case, it comes in the second place in Africa according to the official report by the ranked countries in Africa.

Uganda

And hail the king of drinkers on the African continent. And it’s none other than the East African finest nation Uganda. Ugandans drink from morning to evening every hour, every day of the week, month and year. It’s difficult to find bars closed regardless of where they are located.

In fact, during COVID-19, most of them suggested that the government should leave bars open because the alcohol, according to them, could kill the CoronaVirus. They have all types of liquors that they enjoy and some drinkers even brew it themselves.

Recently a legislator in Parliament tried to suggest a law limiting alcohol consumption but this was fought by her fellow legislators and the government instantly, giving reasons like Ugandans have to drink without interuption.

In Uganda, bars do not have closing time, they are open all day and night and no law enforcers can stop this. Uganda still has the most number of alcohol brands and types and has the most imported liquor brands too.
