PICTORIAL: President Museveni Commissions Nakivubo Stadium After Ages of Waiting

Nakivubo stadium commissioned officially

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni finally commissioned and opened up the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium constructed by city tycoon, Hamis Kiggundu. This stadium stationed in the heart of Kampala city surely brought a beam of joy and celebration on the face of many sports enthusiasts.

In the presence of state sports Minister, Hon Peter Ogwang, Museveni applauded the young billionaire for being patriotic and loving his country which was exhibited through the construction of this stadium.

“I thank Mr. Hamis Kiggundu for his innovative spirit and congratulate the NRM for the smart policy of involving the private sector.”

“Mr. Kiggundu’s idea of constructing this stadium was clear to me during our previous meetings, and I promised him full government support as long as it benefits our people.” the president added.

Meanwhile, the President informed the audience that as much as Mr. Ham Kiggundu has renovated and rehabilitated Nakivubo stadium, it does not belong to him. It belongs to Ugandans and Ham can only recover his money invested in it as he was given a lease of 49 years. The President also added that there are plans to build more stadiums.

Mr. Kiggundu can run it for the next 49 years to recoup his investment, but the stadium belongs to the people of Uganda. Future governments will decide its fate.” He noted

“We shall build two more stadiums in the meantime and ensure that they meet international standards. Additionally, we will complement them with zonal stadiums in the near future. Prioritization is key; bugu bugu si muliro, akwata empola atuuka wala.
Thank you!.” He added.

It should be recalled that this legendary stadium was closed off to the public in 2017. Since then, lots of renovation works have been ongoing. Although it was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, it finally got completed.

Some of the upgrades at this stadium are a seater arena, artificial playing turf, netball courts, basketball court, boxing arena, fully stocked gym, VIP executive box and others.
