Kakwenza Rukirabashaija, a brave writer who isn’t afraid to criticize the Ugandan government, says he was badly tortured and hurt while in custody. Imagine being arrested just for writing a story, he even pointed a finger at a powerful general, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son, saying Muhoozi told him to stop writing things that are critical of the government. Scary, right?
He took his case to a big court, the East African Court of Justice, hoping for justice. But, get this he decided to drop the case! He’s basically saying, “What’s the point?” because he doesn’t think he can get a fair trial.
In his own words, “They have made a mockery of justice. I sought help from the East African Court, but there’s no justice in sight.” This has shocked a lot of people, especially those who fight for human rights. They see this as a big step backward for Uganda.
It makes people wonder, if someone like Kakwenza, who’s well-known and has support, can’t get justice, what about ordinary people? Think of it like this, if someone steals your lunch money and gets away with it, others might think they can do it too.
Kakwenza Rukirabashaija actually escaped Uganda and went to Europe last year. It’s a bit of a mystery how he pulled that off since he wasn’t supposed to leave the country. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? But we think this is not the end of it all.

So, what happens now? Well, that’s a big question mark. Human rights groups are definitely worried about what this means for Uganda’s future. They say Kakwenza’s case is just one example of a bigger problem in their fight.
