News coming in indicates that, former Chief of Staff in the Idi Amin regime Rtd. Major Gen. Yusuf Gowon 88 is dead. His death occurred on Friday February 2, at Arua Regional Referral Hospital.
This news was broken a one Sheikh Abdumutalib Kiiza, who happens to be Rtd Gen Yusuf Gowan’s close relative. He said that Gowon has been sick for a while and been down for some time since last year. And revealed that of recent he was suffering from malaria.
In his statement, Sheikh Abdumutalib Kiiza chirped that the cause of death of the Retired Major General is a heart failure. That was after he was admitted at Arua Regional Referral Hospital since February 1st 2024 for some days on the same heart issue.
“Mzee Gowan had been a bit sick. He has been down since early last year. Lately he suffered bouts of malaria. He has been in and out of hospital till he developed heart failure of late” Sheikh Abdumutalib Kiiza said.
Additionally, former LC5 chairman of the then greater Arua District Richard Andama Ferua, described the late Yusuf Gowon as a disciplined former army officer who played a pivotal role in bringing peace in West Nile region. He added that, Gowon was visionary and disciplined.
“He was a disciplined, visionary and organized former army officer, he is one of the people to secure our peace here in West Nile region” he started. And then added that there would be no security meetings in West Nile without him.

“We shall surely miss him, It is a great loss is because he was one of coordinators of the ex-combatants and always engages the groups to appreciate peace and stability in West Nile” Andama Ferua concluded.
Rtd Major Gen. Yusuf Gowon burial will be buried today at the Muslim Cemetery in Arua city.
