Luzira maximum prison to be transformed into a hotel and relocate to Buikwe

Plans to relocate Luzira Maximum Prison are underway as the president directed in 2022. And the current location of the maximum prison is to be transformed into an ultra modern city suburb that will have a five star hotel and other services.

News getting to us indicate that, the Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has already identified a 3.5 square miles land in Buikwe district and 1 square mile is to be purchased where the oldest and the largest prison Luzira will be relocated to.

Minister of Internal Affairs Kahinda Otafiire shed some light on this, and gave the reason why Luzira maximum prison is being relocated and why the hotel is to be built on the premises where the prison currently sits.

For a long time we have wanted to remove the prison from the city Centre, as it is dangerous to have a maximum prison in the city center” he explained. This is how Chinese company,  Tian Tang Group comes in the picture, as the same group contacted president Museveni with a proposal.

This involves turning Luzira prison into an ultra modern city suburb named Uganda International Conference and Commercial Hub and the president bought the idea. Now, the Antono Lutwama Kabogoza family that owns this land where Luzira prison sits has its lawyers addressing this and they are pushing for them to sell it off completely.

It should be known that, currently, Luzira has a capacity of 1,700 inmates but it holds over 7,700 inmates currently. Which has led to it being so terribly congested. The plan to relocate it also will see it rebuilt to a capacity of 10,000 inmates.
