The government of Uganda is providing iron sheets to schools and institutions in Busoga and Luwero regions that need help with their roofs. This is part of a bigger plan to make sure all kids have safe and healthy places to learn.
This comes after some schools having roofs that need to be replaced, and it’s not safe for the kids inside. That is why the government is stepping up to help. And for that case, it is delivering a whole bunch of iron sheets to schools in need. This is a good initiative because it means those schools can have strong, new roofs.
Why are iron sheets so important?
Think about it. A roof protects you from rain, sun, and all sorts of weather. If a roof is in bad shape, it can’t do its job properly. Some schools even have roofs made of something called asbestos, which can be dangerous for people’s health. The government wants to get rid of asbestos roofs and replace them with safe, sturdy iron sheets.
The Minister of State for Luwero-Rwenzori, Hon. Alice Kaboyo, is leading this awesome project. She said that the government learnt of asbestos being so dangerous, and it decided to step in and help. She further asked leaders to access well the iron sheets needed to replace in schools.
“We learnt that asbestos is very dangerous, and I urge leaders to assess the extent of the issue in schools and provide us with an estimate of the iron sheets needed to replace the hazardous roofing.” She chirped. Indicating that the government is still up for its young citizens.
It should be noted that, the government isn’t just giving out iron sheets. They’re also helping communities in other ways. For example, they’re giving money to groups of people who want to start small businesses.
This can help people earn money and improve their lives in form of Emyooga funds and Parish Development Model. Plus, they’re building new classrooms for schools that are overcrowded. These new classrooms have bathrooms and offices, too, making them much better places to learn.
This initiative has sent local leaders like Jinja RDC Richard Gulume into happiness because they know how important safe schools are for their communities. They’re also making sure that the iron sheets are being used correctly and not wasted.
Also, Hon. Iddi Isabirye, a member of parliament, praised Minister Kaboyo for being open and honest about how the sheets are being distributed. He said, “If your office moves like this, the people here will feel very proud of the government and you will be a role model to other government leaders.”

We are waiting to see how far this project will go, as far as we know, the last project that involved iron sheets, was for Karamoja region which died before it started after top government officials distributed the iron sheets to themselves.
