Yesterday was the worst in the history of Nollywood and African entertainment as the legend of Nollywood, one of the oldest actors in Africa John Okafor aka Mr. Ibu died. News spread like wild fire as Twitter/X and other social media networks were painted his name.
Now, the question remains, what is the real cause of his death? well, before we delve into the cause, let us first have a complete background of how the legendary actor Mr. Ibu has been battling an illness.
Nigeria’s John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr. Ibu has been on and off hospital for some time. This made him get bankrupt even and compelled his family to appeal to the public for a financial support and prayers as his medical bills were always pilling up.
In October 2023, Okafor John aka Mr. Ibu revealed that he was suffering from an ailment that threatened to make it necessary to amputate one of his legs. He said he was struck by the problem while on a movie set with other Nollywood actors.
He was then taken to Evercare Hospital in Lekki where he spend time and In November 2023, he underwent a leg amputation one of required seven surgeries. This sidelined his entire health and made him a regular in the hospital.

Until 27th February 2024 where he suffered a shock while at Evercare Hospital and he was sent to ICU. And on 2nd March 2024 he was pronounced dead by the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, Emeka Rollas. This sent a worldwide wave of shock and the entire Nollywood family was left in grief.
Now, the real cause of his death has been confirmed to be a Cardiac Arrest which he suffered while in ICU. His family through one of his 10 children has confirmed and asked for maximum privacy in this trying time.
Although, some media outlets have been reporting that Mr. Ibu was poisoned while on set for a certain movie, but his family refuted the claims by giving the real cause of his death as mentioned above.
