Inspector General to Investigate Uganda Census Statistical Errors

Inspector General to investigate UBOS false resulsts

The Ugandan Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) messed up really so much. They had to take back their report on the 2024 National Population and Housing Census because the numbers for some tribes were way off. Now, the Inspector General of Government (IGG) is stepping in to see what went wrong.

Hold on to your hats, because things are about to get interesting here at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, those in charge of counting everyone in the country, made a pretty big mistake that landed them in trouble.

They had to pull their report on the 2024 census because the numbers for some tribes were, well, wrong! Imagine if your teacher mixed up everyone’s test scores that’s kind of what happened here. Ugandans were upset, especially on social media (you know, places like X).

They were wondering how UBOS could get something so important so wrong. It’s like forgetting to count all the cookies in a jar, not cool. UBOS tried to fix the mistake and said it was just a little “human error”. They said they mixed up the numbers for the Langi, Acholi, Bakiga, and Bagisu tribes.

It’s easy to mix things up sometimes, but when you’re counting millions of people, you got to be extra careful. This has also sparked a talk and revealed that that is how the Electoral Commission mixes up votes and announces wrong ones.

Inspector General Steps In

The Inspector General of Government, Beti Olive Namisango Kamya, said she’s going to investigate what happened at Ubos. She wants to make sure they followed the rules and spent the money for the census the right way. It’s like when your parents check your homework to make sure you did it right!

Ms. Kamya seems pretty serious about this investigation. She even mentioned that a couple of years ago, her office investigated Ubos and found some employees who had to pay back money they shouldn’t have taken! Sounds like Ubos has a bit of a history of messing up.

What Happens Next?

Well, we’ll have to wait and see what the Inspector General finds out. UBOS says they haven’t heard from her office yet, but they’re probably a little nervous. In the meantime, the corrected census results show that Uganda now has 45.9 million people.

The Baganda are still the biggest tribe, with over 7 million people. That’s like having a whole city full of people from just one tribe!
